Yiddish Proverbs

Speak the Truth

If you add to the truth, you take something away from it.
You recognize the truth by its own sound.
Truth never dies, but lives a wretched life.
The world exists on three things: truth, justice, and peace.
The truth is a heavy burden that few care to carry.
The punishment of a liar is that he is never believed, even when he speaks the truth.
A jest is half a truth.
Nothing tastes more bitter than the truth.
Truth is the safest lie.

Be Wise

With money in your pocket, you are wise, you are handsome, and you sing well, too.

It is better to be in hell with a wise man than in heaven with an idiot.

If God wants people to suffer, he sends them too much understanding.

Better a slap from a wise man than a kiss from a fool.

A fool who can keep silent is counted among the wise.

A fool says what he knows, and a wise man knows what he says.

When the wise man gets angry, he stops being wise.

When a fool has the cow by the horns, the wise man can milk it.
