“Five centuries after Martin Luther wrote his 95 theses, religious reformers may be victims of their own success. They have clearly established the primacy of individual conscience in the shaping of Western religious culture. Clerical institutions have largely lost the authority to declare themselves the sole avenue to personal salvation or redemption. Individuals are now free to choose their own paths. Religion must compete for attention in the marketplace of ideas. That, essentially, is what the Reformation demanded. Well, it got what it asked for.”
