I’m at a loss. Is this one of the parts of Islam we westerners are supposed to respect? Is it so hard to believe that a culture (as lived by some and blessedly not all Muslims) which defends such a practice is also capable of justifying all sorts of outrages against people or groups they don’t respect in addition to women: infidels of all sorts, cultural and national minorities, and so on. Thank God for the emerging reform movement in Islam. Perhaps the future will be better. —Rabbi Kerry Baker
